INSPECTOR MORSE JAGUAR
When Colin Dexter originally created his Oxford Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse, the iconic Jaguar Mk2 that has become so synonymous with John Thaw's character never featured. In the original Morse stories the policeman actually drove a Lancia, a more off-beat and far less traditional option.
The TV production's decision to switch to a Jaguar Mk2 for Morse to drive immediately rendered his character much different in tone and style and in the process created one of the most famous roles for this evergreen British saloon car. The Jaguar that John Thaw drove iin the series was a lowly 2.4 litre 1960 Mark 2 finished in Jaguar Regency Red with a non-standard black vinyl roof. This small capacity engine made the Jaguar very slow by modern standards and John Thaw reputedly hated driving it.
Inspector Morse was not John Thaw's first brush with the beautiful Jaguar Mk2. He also drove them in The Sweeney, an altogether less sedate cops and robbers programme, which featured high performance 3.8 and 3.4 litre Jaguar Mk2 cars like the ones available to hire from Great Escape.
